CSSA statement regarding the election of Pope Leo XIV

Today (9 April 2025) the CSSA congratulates the Catholic Church – both in England and Wales, and worldwide – on the election of Pope Leo XIV.

Says Mike Cunningham, independent Chair, CSSA:

“We respect what a profound decision this is for the Catholic Church, to have elected their new Leader.

“Cardinal Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, has previously spoken of the importance of listening to victims and survivors of abuse, and about church leaders’ responsibilities in safeguarding.

“We look forward to continuing our independent collaboration with Catholic leaders in England and Wales in this vital work, and in our shared ambition, of a safe Catholic church for all.”
