Word from Mike Cunningham, independent Chair

During my first three months as independent Chair of the CSSA Board I have had opportunity to speak to survivors of abuse, staff across the Agency, and to colleagues from religious life groups, dioceses and other agencies with whom we work. The first thing I would like to say is thank you to all those I have met for making me feel so welcome.

The CSSA is still a relatively young organisation. Its work to date has established a really strong foundation but of course there remains much to do. The Board and I are committed to ensuring that the next stage in the life of the CSSA builds on progress, and anticipates the future.

Our work is primarily about inspection. You will hear much more use of the language of ‘independent inspectorate’ rather than ‘regulator’ simply because this is a more accurate description of how the CSSA is evolving, beyond our baseline audits. The most effective way of driving up safeguarding standards is through independent, high quality inspections with clear and evidence-based recommendations. We will also publish more of our thematic findings, and more analysis of risk. This will enable the Church to identify national best practice and to share learning in safeguarding. It will also allow the CSSA to respond flexibly in terms of how we prioritise.

When I was appointed Chair, I set out my determination that the voice of survivors would not only be heard but would shape and influence our work. We have much more to do to achieve this and the Board have agreed that this an immediate priority; it remains my personal commitment and work is ongoing to to ensure this happens.
